Antics alumnes i governança universitària

Curiós això d’estar tants anys a l’oposició per arribar al govern i no saber què fer. Tenim molts exemples, aquí i allà, ara i abans. Un de fa pocs dies: s’ha creat una comissió per analitzar el futur de les universitats espanyoles. Dues opcions: una, no tenien pla; i dos, addicional o complementària a l'anterior, no volen fer res (si mai vols bloquejar qualsevol acció proposa fer una comissió).

Una reforma pendent és la governança universitària (com explicava aquí), en especial com s’elegeix el rector, la capacitat que té per actuar, i el paper, rol i composició del consell social. I sobre la composició, una reflexió molt interessant de Shailendra Raj Mehta: la importancia del control del Board per part dels antics alumnes el que explicaría, segons ell, per què Harvard és la millor Universitat del món.

Mehta also focused on reasons why alumni-controlled Boards seem to work much better. Alumni, he said, were the people who cared most about advancing the interests of their school, as they are keen to increase “the value of their sheepskin”. Transferring control of the Board to the alumni, he said, is transferring power to those who care the most about the quality and the reputation of the school. The alumni do not have to act as a unified body, as is rarely the case. The diverse views of the alumni provide for better governance in a system where governance and management of the university is separated. In order to facilitate the management, the trustees need to agree on a specific direction for the school and find a president who can deliver it on that strategy. 

Aquí tens una presentació i una reflexió sobre el tema. No sé si això explica l’èxit de Harvard, però sí que crec en la importància fonamental d’aprofitar la xarxa d’antics alumnes per enriquir la pròpia universitat, incloent la seva governança.
